Chemical Warfare

Jay PatelWarfare has experienced much innovation from conventional weapons like blades and guns to nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare.  I have played different first person shooters like Call of Duty and Halo, but I wasn’t too familiar with the other styles of warfare.  With the chemical attacks happening in Syria I was curious as to how chemical warfare actually affects humans.  I was surprised to find that these popular video games that we all love to play use some non-conventional weaponry even in an elementary fashion.

The different classes of chemical agents include nerve (attack and block certain nervous functions), blood (attack blood cells, cause them to burst or prevent them from using oxygen), blister (blisters and burns on the skin), pulmonary (impair and eventually stop breathing), lachrymatory (severe eye stinging and temporary blindness).  These agents can be lethal and non-lethal.  Non-lethal is normally used for controlling crowds or riots.  They disable people cause temporary blindness and dizziness.  Tear gas and nova gas are example of non lethal but only when used in small doses.  Its atrocious to see how these chemicals, found in toilet cleaners, cigarettes, and paint thinner, can be weaponized to destroy societies around the world.

The lethal chemicals used in the recent attacks in Syria involved nerve gas.  Its mechanism involves blocking enzymes critical to specific biochemical reactions.  For example nerves that control our muscles and our breathing would fire irregularly and cause muscle spasms and convolution, while simultaneously slowing down breathing.   Different names of the chemical agents used are sarin gas, chlorine, mustard gas and hydrogen cyanide.  The most important thing to note is that the dose of the chemical determines how lethal it is.  For example, chlorine in small quantities is used to clean water in swimming pools but in high doses it causes severe irritation in the nose, throat, and lungs.

Something interesting to note about the chemicals used in the attacks is that this is not the first time that we have seen these agents used.  They have been used in Vietnam, Japan, the Middle East, and of course Nazi Germany, but the were never utilized to attack another country in the same manner as in Syria.  These weapons were mainly targeted at specific groups of people to control anarchy in different areas.  How far countries will go with chemical warfare?  There’s a reason that no country has attacked with nuclear weapons after the US dropped the atomic bomb on Japan.  Now that countries have seen the consequences of a chemical attack first hand hopefully they are smart about preventing warfare instead of developing more ways to kill.  A reported 355 people died in the chemical attack.

2DS On The Way

Outside of the Street Fighter franchise, you may find it difficult to recall any company that releases so many iterations of a single product. Keeping in step with the tradition, Nintendo will be releasing the 2DS . . . yes 2DS, October 12th alongside the launch of Pokemon X/Y. According to Kotaku’s interview with Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Aime, the 2DS will have all the capabilities of the 3DS (compatible with 3DS/DS games, pictures and video can still be taken in 3D), but it simply will not have an option to render games in 3D.

The other interesting twist on this new design is the fact that the system does not fold. The 2DS’ “slate” design means that all buttons and both screens will be exposed at all times unless placed in a carrying case which Nintendo will be conveniently selling for $12.99.

To be realistic, most people completely ignore the 3D feature on their 3DS anyway, so this is not such a bad move for late adopters of the system or those who bypassed it because they refused to pay extra for technology they never intended to use. The only issue I see here is Mr. Fils-Aime’s statement, “This is an entry-level handheld gaming system.” At $129.99 ($40 cheaper than the 3DS and $70 cheaper than the 3DS XL and PS Vita) one would think this will be geared towards kids this holiday season, however, with the screen and buttons being exposed to every dropped, spill and other disastrous common accidents, having a system that does not fold could become an issue sooner rather than later. Not that it needs more than a Nintendo seal on it to sell, but I find it hard to really see a spike in sales for this 3DS “turbo/arcade edition.” But hey, I have been wrong before and if anyone can see to it that I am wrong again, it would be Nintendo.

Otaku – Yen Press Licenses SAO Light Novels and More

I honestly didn’t think it was possible. Even today, before I saw the news, I was thinking that light novels had no future in North America. However, Yen Press exceeded my expectations and did the impossible. They’ve announced that they’ve received the licenses to the Sword Art Online and Accel World light novels, along with other releases.

Publishing company, Yen Press, has announced a whole slew of announcements at their industry panel at Japan Expo USA. Yen Press has announced that they have received the licenses to the Sword Art Online and Accel World light novels, both written by Reki Kawahara. Along with the light novels, Yen Press will also be releasing the Sword Art Online manga series, which includes the Aincrad and Fairy Dance arcs. Yen Press will be releasing the first volume of the Sword Art Online light novels in early 2014. As for now, the release date for the Accel World light novels are unknown.

Yen Press has also licensed the Madoka Magica manga spinoff: The Different Story. Original concept from the anime was created by Gen Urobuchi, but this series was created by Hanokage, the author of the original Madoka Magica manga. This manga series will be a what-if story focusing on Tomoe Mami. The story will reveal Mami’s past and how she involved herself with a Mahou Shoujo from another town, Sakura Kyouko. The manga series will deviate from the original story of the anime and will feature an original story of its own. Yen Press is planning to release the first volume of the series in March 2014.

Nearly any anime you see are adaptations from light novels. These series include not only Sword Art Online and Accel World, but also Oreimo, Toradora, A Certain Magical Index, Bakemonogatari, and much, much more. However, the popularity of light novels in North America sorely differs from that of Japan’s. In North America, light novels are considered to be like any other book, and a majority of people don’t like to read anything without a lot of flashy illustrations.
I’m definitely happy that Yen Press made this decision, but on the other hand, this may hurt them more than they were hoping to gain. I highly recommend reading the light novel sources. They include much more content that the anime has not covered, and you may get a head start on that second season of Sword Art Online you’ve always wanted.

Look forward to more news from Yen Press in the future about their newly announced titles, so stay tuned.
