Titanfall: What’s All the Fuss About?

Titanfall, the beloved Xbox One title that took the FPS market by storm, has been out for a while now. So much hype and excitement, but what’s it all about? Why should you play this blockbuster over all of the others? Keep scrolling as we break down some differences and showstoppers that make this game so easy to pick up and even harder to put down.

TitanIn Titanfall, the obvious main attraction is getting a giant mechanical Titan to play in. Initially, you earn a Titan in two minutes, starting at the beginning of the match. Once you receive your Titan, you can use it until it’s destroyed by the enemy team. The time it takes to get a new Titan will decrease with each kill and point you get in the game, so seconds get shaved off at a time. It doesn’t take long to get good enough at the game to be able to play in a Titan throughout the match, if that’s what you prefer. As you will see, there will be multiple Titans on the map at a time through the entirety of each game. This serves to give maps an incredibly dynamic feel. You’re small, Titans are huge, and buildings are even more massive.

Simplicity

Titanfall is simple, which may not come off as a positive attribute at first. As you choose each of your loadouts, you’ll notice that there are a handful of each type of gun or mechanic, and that’s it. So, while Call of Duty: Ghosts may have 10 different assault rifles to choose from, Titanfall has two. In fact, Titanfall  has only 10 primary weapons total, which may shock some people. However, this leads to a much simpler class setup, which in turn makes it more accessible to new players. The simplicity doesn’t stop there. Everything from attachments to perks are cut down to a minimum, and the game lacks camo for weapons  and killstreaks altogether.

Double Jumps and Wall Runs

We’ve already mentioned the size and dynamics of the maps in Titanfall as a pro. A huge part of this is due to double jumps and wall runs. A double jump is pretty self-explanatory: you jump once, then jump again while in the air to get an extra height or distance boost. Pilots have a jetpack attached to their backs at all times, which allows for the double jumping maneuver within the game. Wall runs are even more fun. Running up to a wall at an angle makes your pilot automatically run along the wall for a set distance; however, you are able to jump back and forth between walls or surfaces to perform a much longer wall run. These two maneuvers allow players to scale large buildings and Titans very quickly, creating a fast-paced environment that will constantly keep your adrenaline pumping.

The first four perks here help Titanfall to be more accessible to new players, though this last one is my absolute favorite. When you come across a Titan in a match, you have three options: run, use your Anti-Titan weapon, or “rodeo” the Titan. To perform a rodeo, you just run up to a Titan (careful, they can smash you easily by walking over you) and jump high enough to reach the top. From there you simply press “X” at the prompt and you will plop down onto the top of it. Within a few seconds, you will rip off a piece of the Titan’s armor, exposing some wiring and internals. After that, it’s just a matter of shooting into that sensitive area for about 10 seconds or so (depending on your weapon of choice) and the Titan will be destroyed. Performing a rodeo is easily the most satisfying action I’ve ever experienced in an FPS. Do this a few times in one match, and you’ll be feeling like a total badass in no time, regardless of your skill-level or experience in the genre.

Keep in mind, there are options for the other player whose Titan you are attacking. Pilots (inside the Titan) will get an on-screen notification that an enemy is riding their Titan and will begin to see their health depleting. At that point, the Pilot can eject from the Titan and try to kill the attacking enemy. Pilots also have the option to deploy a dose of electric smoke if the Titan is equipped with it. This secondary weapon will kill the person on the Titan within just a few seconds. After all, all is fair in love and war.

A Gentlereader’s Review of The Gentleviewer’s Obsessive Guide to Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Did you ever wonder what a stevedore is when Buffy mentioned it in season 4 episode 16 of Buffy The Vampire Slayer? The Gentleviewer’s Obsessive Guide to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, second edition reminds us of this and many other references to American popular culture. For me, this book was like hanging out with an old friend, pulling me through the seven seasons of Buffy (and some of the Angel crossover episodes). I especially liked the chapters with the character arcs that direct the reader through the episodes that are a “must watch,” if you want to follow the story of the main characters, as well as their various couplings.

Where this book falls a little short is in its understanding of audience. The title of the book does not provide any hint that the majority of the book will be focused around recording all the references—some of which are more pop culture than others—in each season. As a huge Buffy fan, the references seem to be only a first step; however, author Kathleen Mattson treats it as an end in itself and is inconsistent in the places where she expands her references. For example, with the above mentioned stevedore quote, she simply states where it is found and provides the quote. When Mattson points out the reference to Yma Sumac in “Once More with Feeling” in season 6, she explains that the person is an opera singer.

While she does provide a detailed explanation of how she defines pop culture, Mattson does not follow through on this by making this a reference for people whom may be from a different culture or are unaware of some cultural references. This book would benefit from an explanation of each of the references she points out. Even for those of us who are familiar with American culture, there are a variety of ways that we could be further informed of where these references come from and what they mean.

I had forgotten many of the references and I loved Mattson’s trivia and previous episode references. Others may truly appreciate the detail work in uncovering the music in the episode and the end charts, which include all the characters who appear in each season and whether they are alive, mentioned, or even a ghost.

My overall recommendation depends on the price and the purpose. If you are familiar with American culture, but a first time Buffy viewer, you may enjoy learning about some of those references that are explained. The episode references may also be useful for those who are new to the show as it will allow you to outline your episode plan, if you’re not able to watch them all. However, if many American cultural references from the ’90s and before are foreign to you, this book will not help you with that problem and you will have to look elsewhere for that understanding.

Game developers often pull from pop culture in an attempt to blend mediums to an often terrible, but sometimes awesome, degree. Ouch! Couch is one of these attempts, but will it become a memorable gaming experience or will it fail to catch an asphalt wave?

Ouch! Couch was developed by Twistory Entertainment Studios, a company that also developed Belle’s War and Shinjuku Nexus. Twistory has published several graphic novels and have even collaborated with Yoshitaka Amano. Ouch! Couch takes a different design approach, accepting pixelated crocodiles and penguins over western gunslingers.

The game is visually appealing, especially for those that enjoy retro games. The player stands out amongst the growing chaos. The city in the background has several layers. Kangaroos look as they should, with murderous intent in their marsupial eyes. Everything about this game harkens back to the amazing games of the past, including the music. Of course, this isn’t Chopin, but it does have that sort of Megaman jive gamers have come to enjoy. However,playing long sessions could instill a bit of madness.

New Pokemon Titles Announced, So What

Now, I am not typically in the habit of so quickly and easily dropping things that I have enjoyed since childhood, but I feel that my love for Pokemon has finally faded.

I played them all religiously. I even made an earnest effort to catch them all, as the tagline so demands of us all. Now comes the announcement of Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire and I immediately felt . . . nothing. “Here comes another remake,” I said to myself even though the teaser trailer clearly says “explore a dramatic new world.” I expect a region we have seen before, Pokemon we have seen before and the slightest of tweaks to the gameplay mechanics. I don’t completely hold it against them because, hey “if it ain’t broke . . .” as they say, but I feel like there can be more done with the franchise.

It has been far too long since Nintendo consoles have seen a solid Pokemon title and the Wii U could definitely use the boost. There is a level of depth that the developer, Game Freak, seems to be avoiding for the sake of keeping the game accessible, but I believe gamers are ready for it.

Just in time for Christmas, Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will hit stores worldwide November of this year. It remains to be seen if this will be a legit Pokemon experience or just a revenue generator for future titles. Stay tuned.

Welcome to my spoiler filled corner of the internet where I review comics. I will be here every week with a few reviews for the (usually) newest books. My ratings are simple. I don’t use—or really likenumber ratings. I go by Pass, Read, and Buy. See I told you it was simple. Now that we got that cleared up, let’s get to reviewing some comics!

Rai is a very interesting book. From the cover alone I want to love it. The book is about Japan in the year 4001. Everyone in Japan now lives in what is basically a giant tower in the sky, much like Cloud City or The Jetsons. The structure feels like a ship from Battlestar Galactica as well with its fake sun and resources. The nation of Japan is now run by an entity known only as “Father,” who has created such an excellent place to live that there have been no murders in a 1,000 years. The law is, however, upheld only by one guy: Rai. Things are now changing as a group of rebels are murdering people in an attempt to topple Father’s reign. Everything here feels like a mash up of other great stories; that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The problem for me is that the book was still a bit boring even with so much borrowed. They should have borrowed a better story or at least some better parts to fill it out. The art, however, is beautiful. I’m willing to keep reading just to see more shots of Rai looking like the bad ass futuristic samurai that he is.

This run for our favorite cosmic wave rider has felt so much like an homage to the past. I’m not complaining though; I love it. It feels like an old comic in a good way without forcing it down your throat. The story here feels a bit far fetched, even though it’s a comic about a silver guy who rides through space on a surfboard. I guess far fetched is kind of what all of the stories should be. There’s a hidden planet that’s powered by some all-powerful and all-knowing space goddess’s heart, and now she wants it back. Surfer is “hired” by the planet to kill the goddess, but some events occur that change everything. It’s obvious, but I’m gonna make you read the book to find out exactly what it is. Though I do love old comics, I’m much more a fan of the look current comics have. The art here is done very well, but in the old style. I can respect it, but it’s not my favorite to look at.

Amazing Spider-Man #1

That’s right we’re back to number one with this series—again. During the time that I’ve been reading comics, this has happened way to many times to this series. Every time something big happens, good or bad, it just jumps back to number one. It’s really annoying. (Lately, all comics seem to be doing this and I’m about to break off in an angry tangent here.) Anyways, on the heels of the greatest Spidey story in recent memory, a really low bar admittedly, the book picks up right where Superior Spider-Man leaves off. Immediately we see Spider-Man back to his old shenanigans, which really sucks. Spidey was truly superior when Doc Ock was the one running the show in his head. This issue is very entertaining though. It’s mostly just Peter reacting to everything that Doc Ock did to his life, while he was “away.” Such as getting Peter his Doctrine, setting up plans to marry his current girlfriend, and making him the CEO of his own company. There is also some hilarious moments of the Avengers and Human Torch making fun of the clearly rusty Spidey. The book looks great, but nothing too amazing. Also featured here are some shorts about where some of the other relationships of Peter’s currently stand. They were interesting enough, but did nothing except hype other books and future arcs for this book. Finally,  Inhuman #1 was icluded in this issue. It was (and still is) a mediocre book when it came out. It’s about that slow-moving fart gas they call the Terrigen Mist. This Mist is slowly making its way around the Earth and turning what appear to be “normal” people into Inhumans. Yep it’s as boring as it sounds.

My Recommendation: Buy
