Indie Game Alert: Keipr Online

p8c I am officially addicted to learning about new and upcoming indie games. They always have pieces of what makes video games great, then builds on them with new and great ideas. When I was introduced to Keipr (pronounced kai.per) Online, I was excited to see what new concepts this game would introduce. My first thought when I visited the Indie DB site was “I NEED this game.” The team at Goon Studios promises Keipr Online will be a completely open world where players can become and do pretty much anything they want.

This will be a MMO sandbox game: No mini map, no way point, just you and thousands of other players trying to create an adventure. Players start off as a planetary colonist whose star ship (Keipr) has crashed. After waking up from a cryo sleep, what you do with your life is completely your choice. You can start a business, become a criminal, or run your own town. If you like to live dangerously, you can become a bounty hunter and travel the world on your ship; it’s all up to the you. Keipr_City Players will also have some creative control by voting on what the developers should add into the game next. Submarines, space ships, castle sieges (yes, you can build a castle and be a king if you want), and alien invasions can all be a part of Keipr Online, if players want the tools to create them. Modders will also be able to contribute their skills.

KO

The world looks beautiful and the potential for this much freedom makes me so very happy, but I need to know more: How far will the Goons take it? Will players be able to start a family? If players decide to be shop owners, is that all they will do the entire game or will they have objectives also? How much freedom will modders have? Creating a completely open world is always tough—especially when there is a wide range of gamers developers have to to appeal to—and not everyone can pull it off (*cough* Rockstar *cough*). I really hope Goon Studios can keep its promise. If they do, this game will be epic. I can’t wait.

Keipr Online: Making of 3D Creature

Keipr Online is set to be released sometime in 2014. Unfortunately, there is no demo yet, but you can watch videos and see pictures of the game on Indie DB. On the Goon Studios website, you can get some tips on the indie process, learn about the team, and get up-to-date news on their blog. Make sure to show your support on Steam, Twitter, and Facebook.

The VGX Awards Show was a Fail, Again

After watching the revamped VGX awards show and witnessing every tweet rip the show apart, I can’t help but wonder why Spike can’t get it right. This attempt to make the show and video games just as relevant as movies and music is unnecessary. If Spike does decide to take another shot at the awards thing, at least hire people who know a lot of something (we’ve seen what a little something gets us) about video games, to put the show together. Is that too much to ask?

Ever since Spike first aired the Video Game Awards show in 2003, the gaming community has, understandably, torn it down. Video games always took a back seat to the glitz and glamour, celebrity appearances, and musical performances. The VGX was supposed to be Spike’s attempt at finally making their awards show about the games and the people who make them. The intimate setting and one-on-one interviews were supposed to give developers a chance to talk about their creations and give gamers a sneak peek of what is to come. Instead, the interviews felt like a rushed and sloppy E3. The developers would talk for five minutes, Joel McHale would make an awkward joke, and then Geoff Keighley would cut the interview short, announcing time was running out. It’s like Keighley’s sole purpose as co-host was to make sure everything stayed on time. Honestly, I didn’t really care for the interviews. I just wanted to see the world premiere trailers and demos. Directors aren’t interviewed during the Oscars, so why do interviews during an awards show? That is what E3, comic con, and other conventions are for.

Other awards shows enlist a celebrity for the hosting gig, and Spike has followed this tradition every year: David Spade, Snoop Dogg, Samuel Jackson (four times), Jack Black, Neil Patrick Harris, Zachary Levi, and now Geoff Keighley and comedian Joel McHale. I’m sure all of these hosts have played video games, and I’m sure some of them enjoy video games very much, but what is wrong with getting someone within the gaming industry—preferably someone who talks to an audience about video games on a daily basis—to host the show? There are a number of people with podcasts and websites where their sole purpose is to talk about video games and feel comfortable doing it. Keighley and McHale made it feel awkward.

These all purchase cheap levitra forms start showing the effects within 40 minutes of intake, only when they are taken during the stimulation. In fact, men in their youth also face trouble getting erection at one time or other, but this condition is a symptom of some other bigger issue which might be physical, psychological or a mixture of both. levitra prescription online

Watching Joel force jokes and Geoff chuckle uncomfortably and quickly move on to the next thing made it painful to watch. The hosts also made sure to constantly comment on how much they love and play video games. They don’t have a real passion for video games and it showed. The sarcasm, disinterest, and constant berating of gamers were just too much.

Video games are a unique form of entertainment. Dousing it with the same formalities as any other awards show does not work. The gaming community is strong enough to stand on its own without needing to force its relevance. The funny skits, the secret trailers, and the gameplay demos are what kept me watching. I was even excited about the concert at the end of the show because I knew the music would be from a video game. These things should be kept for the next show.

Go ahead, have the awards take place at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, but fill it with real fans. Have musical performances as long as the music is from video games. Don’t even worry about making it a star studded affair; for once, it’s not about the celebrities. Hire hosts who love video games and would genuinely be excited. Put the show back on television—a marathon of Cops aired on the Spike channel during the VGX stream. Take elements of other awards shows and make them relevant to video games, instead of trying to force it into this traditional pattern. Gamers may have their disagreements (PS4 vs. Xbox One) and temper tantrums (Mass Effect 3 ending), but there is one thing we can all agree on: Spike failed again. Will it be able to gain back our trust or even our attention? At this point, I really don’t know. Maybe Spike should just give up and let someone else give it a try.

Am I a Bad Female Gamer?

When I was a hardcore Battlefield 3 addict (now a hardcore Battlefield 4 addict) and needed a good laugh, I would peruse the Battlefield forum. One day, I came across a female player complaining about the lack of female soldiers in multiplayer. I felt bad, not because I too wanted to play as a kick-ass female soldier, but because it never crossed my mind. I tried to justify my lack of feminism by thinking, “Well, [at that time] female soldiers are not allowed to serve in combat, so it would only make sense to not have a female soldier in multiplayer.” Yes, it is just a game, but DICE does pride itself on how realistic Battlefield is compared to other FPS’s. Besides, you can’t even see your character while playing.

Then it happened again. I stumbled upon an article about how Rockstar missed out on the opportunity to cast a female lead in GTA V. After reading the article, I again thought to myself, “Hmm, I didn’t even think about that.” Even though the author (a guy) is right—it would have been interesting to have a female main character in GTA for once—it never crossed my mind and it didn’t bother me. Why? I’m starting to think I’m just a horrible representative for female gamers. No I’m not taking scantily clad “geek” pictures or recording my boobs on twitch and flirting for a donation, but I still feel ashamed, guilty. I should be standing on a mountain top shouting, “We need more women in games!” but I’m not. I’m quietly enjoying these games as is, as long as they don’t reinforce any negative (“You should be in the kitchen blah, blah, blah”) stereotypes.

Some female gamers have a hard time connecting with the male characters they are forced to play as. Maybe I’m just used to playing as a male, so it doesn’t bother me as much. To me, playing a video game is like reading a book; as long as the story is good, I don’t care about the sex of the characters. I can still make a connection because the story intrigues me or because I sympathize with their situation. I’m reading this book or playing this game because I want to learn about the characters and their story. A female lead doesn’t create an automatic connection; it’s still someone else’s story and whether I enjoy it or not doesn’t depend on the character’s sex. It’s great to see a kick-ass female lead in video games, but it’s not the first complaint I think of if she is missing.

Character creation is becoming more popular in games. Creating my own character gives me the chance to play as a woman and create my own story. That is more satisfying to me because I can make the decisions and create my own path. No there isn’t a female lead in GTA V, but I can create one and choose whether or not I want to go skydiving with Dom or help out Lamar on one of his missions (unlike in the story).

Maybe I’m just ill-prepared to fight for women in games because of how I grew up. My sister (who is ten years older than me) introduced me to video games when I was very young. We had all the systems: NES to PlayStation 1. In middle school and high school, my two best friends (who are sisters and have no brothers) were also gamers. We spent—what had to be—thousands of hours playing GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark. Female gamers were the norm for me growing up. All of the women (including my mom) in my life played video games, and we were never told they are for boys only. Though this issue existed then, I completely missed out on it and am now confused by the outcry of feminism in the gaming world.

I’m not saying I’m against having more positive female characters in gaming, far from it. I’m just saying I suck at being a feminist. Sometimes I don’t see things the same way other women see things.

Pokemon X/Y: What’s New

Once again, back, it is the incredible! In less than one month, 3DS and 2DS owners will be able to get their hands on Pokémon X/Y stateside. In preparation for this joyous release (October 12, 2013 for those counting down), I have compiled some of the bigger changes to the mechanics, graphics and overall gameplay of the up coming 6th generation titles.

Not since the olden days of Pokémon Gold/Silver on the Gameboy Color, have fans seen a new type classification in the Pokémon world. X/Y will introduce the Fairy-type. This will not only include new Pokémon to the series (like the new Eevee evolution, Sylveon and Pokémon X’s cover creature, Xerneas), but even old favorites will be retyped to be included in the Fairy class (like Jigglypuff and Marill). What is most interesting about the new Fairy-types is where they sit in type match-ups. Fairy-type attacks are only the third Pokémon type that is super-effective against Dragons. They are also super-effective on Fighting and Dark types. On the flip side, Fairy-type attacks only dish out half damage to Fire, Poison and Steel -types. As far as defense goes, Fairy-types take half damage from Fighting, Bug and Dark-types and take super-effective hits from Poison and Steel-types. The kicker though, Dragon-type attacks are completely ineffective against Fairy-types. Game changer? I think so.

  • MEGA EVOLUTIONS

Once upon a time, way back in the Pokémon Red/Blue days, there was a rumor of God-Pokémon. They were to be an evolution of the final stages for the Kanto starters: Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur. Back then, this was of course, a lie. Now, it is truth. Along with those starters, other favorites including Lucario and Hoenn starter, Blaziken, will have mega evolutions. These powered up forms increase stats and may even grant your Pokémon a new in-battle ability; however, these effects do not last. There are two things that will keep players from spamming these unique evolutions: each Pokémon will require a specific mega evolution item in order to evolve and these transformations can only take place during battle. For those of you, like myself, that have a couple of Kanto starters in your box, you cannot just spam a fleet of Mega Blastoises (assuming that is the plural of it). Also, in keeping with the theme of version specific Pokémon, the legendary Mewtwo returns with a mega evolution that is dependent on which version of the game you are playing.

  • TRAINING IMPROVEMENTS

For those who are not aware of the depths of Pokémon, allow me to put you on game. There are three types of stats in Pokémon: the stats you see (Attack, Special Attack, Defense, Special Defense, HP and Speed), the stats you do not see (Effort Values) and the stats you almost do not believe exist (Individual Values). The first comes as simple numeric values. You can have a 100 for Special Attack, which determines how effective your special attacks (i.e. flamethrower or water gun) will be against your opponent’s Special Defense. Savvy? Excellent. What a lot of people do not know about are Effort Values or EVs. To put it simply, every Pokémon has a particular stat tied to it (i.e. Pikachu is worth two Speed EVs). For every four points you accumulate towards a stat, your stat will go up by one (if you knock out two Pikachus at two Speed EVs each, your Speed will go up by one). Originally, you would not be able to see these values in any concrete way. X/Y will not only give you an easier way to earn these points, but also allow you to watch your Pokémon grow through the use of mini games. Though they have yet to show the full list of games, the basic premise will be play the game, earn Training Bags and then use Training Bags to raise your stats. Far easier than having to hunt down a particular Pokémon and battle it ad nauseam, until you achieve the desired effect. The final stat, Individual Values or IVs, deals with a Pokémon’s most basic statistical levels and determines what the highest level of a particular stat may be. This is a completely different level of depth, which does not seem to have changed much in this new generation. Just remember it is indeed there.

  • AND SO MUCH MORE

Honestly, there are a lot of new minor details, which may not stand out until your average players are hours into their adventure. You will be able to customize your character’s look to a fair extent (hair style and color, skin color and even style of clothes as you get further into the game).

Everything You Need to Know about Madden NFL 25

If a game is popular enough to reach 25 iterations, let alone in consecutive years, a publisher knows they are doing something right (having the NFL license surely does not hurt either). EA Sports will be releasing Madden NFL 25 on August 27, 2013, and EA Tiburon has added even more advancements to their incredible Infinity Engine; calling it Infinity Engine 2.0.

Madden NFL 13 may have been the best Madden we have ever played. The game looked incredible, but the new physics engine worked seamlessly with most parts of the game. Passing and leading receivers has never been easier. Linebackers no longer jumped 10 feet in the air to snag unrealistic balls. Many things went according to play.

I gave Madden NFL 13 a 9.2 and have fallen back in love with the franchise. The minor issues I had with the game were about the running game (or lack thereof). Running the ball up the middle was nearly impossible most plays because the running back would get caught up on the offensive linemen.

Running feels extremely fluid in the Madden NFL 25 demo (available now for PS3 and Xbox 360), but we already know when something becomes enhanced, a balance must be struck. EA will also be introducing a heat seeking tackling to assist defenders in making plays. This precision tackling will assist both newcomers to the franchise and veterans alike. Some Madden players who have been playing for years still let the CPU handle tackling for them. A great offensive player can easily make some decent players miss tackles consistently. This new heat seeking tackle system will make it more difficult to get around would-be tacklers.

EA is doing more than adding new gameplay features. The Madden NFL 13 feature of Connected Careers mode will be even more enhanced with the all-new Connected Franchise mode, where players will once again be able to control the owner of the team. Does this mean we will once again be able to relocate our teams, change ticket prices, edit the uniforms, hire our own coaches and more? Yes, EA has given us this right yet again and boy does it feel amazing! Players will have the option to move their teams to dozens of locations. These locations show how much the city is willing to put up for you to build your stadium there, fan appeal and more. Picking the correct location may be difficult, as there will be many great options. From options I have seen so far, Toronto and London will each have their own NFL teams in Madden NFL 25. Having this option will be amazing. I could not, however, see how this affects how much money players will have to re-sign player between seasons, or if the decisions you make as an owner do not affect your overall salary cap budgets.

Another feature fans have been salivating over for years has been the ability to bring your custom playbooks into the Connected Franchise mode. EA is not only allowing players to create their own custom playbooks in Madden NFL 25, players will be able to share their playbooks online with the world! EA has set up a ranking system for players to download and try out as many playbooks as they desire. Players can then rate the playbooks, allowing the cream to rise to the top. Within weeks, I believe players will have a plethora of great playbook options to choose from. This has to be one of the features I am most excited about. Chicago has a phenomenal playbook in Madden NFL 13, but there are no QB Read Option plays in any shotgun formation, nor is there a pistol formation. This makes having a mobile quarterback and using the Chicago playbook more difficult. Being able to add a couple of different read options out of the shotgun formation and adding a basic pistol formation may not seem like much, but it adds even more depth to an already impressive playbook.

What we actually live in soft viagra tabs is Access to Information Age. They are cialis prescription online as effective as their branded counterparts. Mental stunning results once the mental abilities are briefly disoriented by tadalafil sales overproduction from an excessive amount of data compresion or even stretching out using a neural by means of adjoining cells. A single reading does not necessarily mean discomfort for folk and there is no evidence that toxins build up or have any connection to the more serious condition that buy viagra prescription appears later.

Madden Ultimate Team will be back in Madden NFL 25 as well. Players will once again be able to assemble teams by collecting trading cards, and utilize these cards to assemble the team who fits your play style best.

The Madden All-25 team is littered with spectacular players from the past 25 years of Madden. Michael Vick (also known as the glitchiest player in Madden history from Madden NFL 04) will be helming the team at quarterback with Marshall Faulk behind him. Randy Moss will be split wide across from Brian Finneran. Why Brian Finneran is a Madden All-25 player is beyond my personal comprehension. The only logical excuse for why Finneran was even mentioned to be on the All-25 team is him being a target of Vick’s in the infamous Madden NFL 04. If someone really needed to be selected from that specific team, why not Peerless Price?

The remaining starters on the All-25 team are just as stacked as the first few I mentioned. Deion Sanders, Ray Lewis, Sean Smith, Warren Sapp and more all made their presence felt during their NFL careers and on the screens with friends battling out playing Madden. There are no questions as to why any of these guys were selected as the Madden All-25 team.

The demo for Madden NFL 25 shows many of the offensive and defensive improvements. There were some minor glitches I noticed when playing the demo, however. When players run out of bounds prior to either two minute warning, the clock continues to run after a play is selected. On certain plays, half of one team would go invisible, and all players are able to see are their shadows on the grassy backdrop. Bringing in Danielle Bellini in as a sideline reporter is a good look for EA. As great as Jim Nantz and Phil Simms are, it will be nice to have a third voice with sideline commentary. In the Madden NFL 25 demo, however, Bellini once referred to Robert Turbin as Marshawn Lynch. Again, this is just a demo, and we cannot assume any of these minor glitches will be in the actual game. Even if they do make the final cut of the game, EA will surely fix them with a day one patch.

As we all anxiously await the Madden NFL 25 drop on August 27, let us continue our Madden 13 franchises until the day the next installment drops!  Good luck to each of you in your final seasons on Madden NFL 13, and I wish you the best of luck as Madden NFL 25 releases.
