Science – Perseid Meteor Shower Aug.11th,12th, &13th

Courtesy of: http://science.nasa.gov
July 26, 2013:
In astronomy, there’s nothing quite like a bright meteor streaking across the glittering canopy of a moonless night sky.  The unexpected flash of light adds a dash of magic to an ordinary walk under the stars.

New research by NASA has just identified the most magical nights of all.

“We have found that one meteor shower produces more fireballs than any other,” explains Bill Cooke of NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office.  “It’s the Perseid meteor shower, which peaks on August 12th and 13th.”

Using a network of meteor cameras distributed across the southern USA, Cooke’s team has been tracking fireball activity since 2008, and they have built up a database of hundreds of events to analyze. The data point to the Perseids as the ‘fireball champion’ of annual meteor showers.

A fireball is a very bright meteor, at least as bright as the planets Jupiter or Venus.  They can be seen on any given night as random meteoroids strike Earth’s upper atmosphere. One fireball every few hours is not unusual.  Fireballs become more numerous, however, when Earth is passing through the debris stream of a comet.  That’s what will happen this August.

The Perseid meteor shower comes from Comet Swift-Tuttle.  Every year in early- to mid-August, Earth passes through a cloud of dust sputtered off the comet as it approaches the sun.  Perseid meteoroids hitting our atmosphere at 132,000 mph produce an annual light show that is a favorite of many backyard sky watchers.

Cooke thinks the Perseids are rich in fireballs because of the size of the parent comet.

“Comet Swift-Tuttle has a huge nucleus–about 26 km in diameter,” comments Cooke. “Most other comets are much smaller, with nuclei only a few kilometers across. As a result, Comet Swift-Tuttle produces a large number of meteoroids, many of which are large enough to produce fireballs.”

Perseid Fireballs (histogram, 558px)

Since 2008, the Perseids have produced more fireballs than any other annual meteor shower. The Geminids are a close second, but they are not as bright as the Perseids. “The average peak magnitude for a Perseid observed by our cameras is -2.7; for the Geminids, it is -2,” explains Bill Cooke. “So on average, Geminid fireballs are about a magnitude fainter than those in the Perseids.”

Cooke recommends looking on the nights of August 12th and 13th between the hours of 10:30 PM to 4:30 AM local time. Before midnight the meteor rate will start out low, then increase as the night wears on, peaking before sunrise when the constellation Perseus is high in the sky.

For every fireball that streaks out of Perseus, there will be dozens more ordinary meteors.

“Get away from city lights,” advises Cooke.  “While fireballs can be seen from urban areas, the much greater number of faint Perseids is visible only from the countryside.”

In total, the Perseid meteor rate from dark-sky sites could top 100 per hour.

That’s a lot of magic. Enjoy the show.

Jacques GIGA Staff IconYou all know how I am about wheels (if you don’t, now you do) and me being a big fan of the sci-fi genre makes me want to know what the future looks like for our favorite status symbol of the iconic “rebel”.
My search led me on an arduous  journey across uncharted territories and some of the most dangerous and unpredictable domains that could be found in the seediest parts of what is  called “The internet”.  Exotic designs and some as preposterous as turtles skydiving, filled the landscape.  I must admit, I can see that as a society we have produced a respectable number of innovators, magnificent thinkers, designers, and trailblazers.  A few images caught my eye that I’d like to share with all of you GIGA:geeks reading this.

1) The VentureOne – Concept/prototype

Imagine if you will, the freedom, speed, and power of a basic crotch Rocket (Sports motorcycle), coupled with the reclined riding position of a chopper, mixed with an enclosure to make riding in all-weather sensible, add the semi-familiar economy car interior and you now have my run-on description of this incredibly nifty highway worthy personal vehicle.

The VentureOne is the innovative creation of Ian Bruce, co-founder of Venture Vehicles.  Venture has pushed the envelope with this spotlight worthy work of art and ingenuity. This three-wheeler for the U.S. market offers the familiar feel of the “Lean” or “Tilt”  that core motorcycle enthusiasts that are accustomed to.   Simple mechanics: Turn the wheel, the car tilts into the turn.  How simple is that?

A unique 2-passenger plug-in hybrid vehicle, the VentureOne boasts a whopping 100 miles per gallon.  Reminiscent of a 2012 600cc Yamaha FZ6R, it can accelerate from 0-60 in approx. 6 seconds and pretty impressive top speed of over 100 mph.  Of course I haven’t the pleasure of driving this creature but I can only imagine how exhilarating of an experience it must be.  This vehicle almost immerses the driver into a cockpit like land-based jet fighter.

In the end this for me is a definite option, being a best of all worlds all balled up into a revolutionary package of attractive art.

Here’s an official breakdown
“While the same height and length as the MINI Cooper, the driver in the VentureOne sits as high off the road as a BMW 3-series. When combined with its 360 glass canopy effect, the VentureOne not only provides a driver with tremendous road visibility, but adds to a sense of overall driving confidence.

The VentureOne weighs approximately 1,200 pounds in prototype form, with an overall width of 48 inches, a length of 11′ 8″, and a 106 inch wheelbase. The engine is located in the rear of the vehicle at a low height. The passenger compartment and the front wheel tilt when cornering; however, the forces are aligned with the vertical axis of the driver’s body, resulting in the driver being pressed into the seat rather than pushed across it.

But to treat such sexual disorder in men, there has been a gigantic growth in a number of visit address cialis 40 mg people who actually have this same problem. Conventional medicines are still necessary because sometimes homeopathy does not work for each and every individual. levitra on line The store which is quite popular can be the best one for your hair loss needs. icks.org cialis generico in india And unfortunately, for those having children with abusive partners, this “life cycle” lives on order cheap cialis beyond your personal relationship will get hurt. Although classified as a motorcycle according to the NHTSA (since it has three wheels), the VentureOne has an enclosed body. The reinforced roll-cage construction in combination with front-and-side-impact protection, and a highly efficient passenger restraint system, give the occupants a level of protection comparable to conventional cars or statistically, 33 times the safety of a typical motorcycle.”

2) Tron Lightcycle – Concept/prototype

I don’t think I have to verbalize just how Nuckin Futz the idea is of having an authentic replica of Steven Lisberger’s 1982 Tron light-cycle parked outside of a restaurant waiting for you after stopping to enjoy a Philly cheese-steak with extra jalapenos.  The talented and dedicated crew at Parker Brothers Concepts (no relations to the game guys) have delivered, to the delight of Tron fans globally, a geeks ultimate dream. Running on an electric motor and lithium ion batteries, the electric Tron Light cycle purports reaching a top speed in excess of 100 mph minutes and is able to travel approx. 100 miles on a single charge with 35 minute recharge time in between.  With fiber carbon laminated rims and custom wheels, this street legal beast can run on electric or gas depending on preference.  This is a historic event for geeks from all walks and from what I could gather purchasing one of the bikes also gets you a theme appropriate bike helmet similar to the ones in the movie.  calm down, breathe.

As of now lotsoloot.com reported that “there are only five in existence and they were auctioned off on ebay this past summer with a starting price of $35,000”.

So, I hope I gave you fans of Cars & Bikes something to look forward to; the future looks bright indeed my people, bright indeed.

Other Great Designs I came across during my travels around the web.

Innovators Need Patent Reform
Open Letter
The undersigned are software and tech startups, or we are investors, lawyers, accelerators, and others who work with innovators. Startups face countless demands from patent trolls for licenses and royalties. These demands often frivolously assert vague and overbroad patents that cover common features of many websites and apps – like online shopping cartslive chat services, and order tracking.  These demands cause extraordinary distraction, require expensive lawyers to respond, and often necessitate payment of nuisance settlements so we can move on with our business.
Patent trolls, particularly the smash-and-grab variety that prey on startups, do not innovate or add any value to the economy.  They buy patents solely for the purpose of pressuring companies to pay nuisance royalties. Even rapid court victories cost several hundred thousand dollars, and pre-litigation costs can be tens of thousands of dollars. As a result, startups pay too much money to patent lawyers, which otherwise would pay developers to improve products or sales people to grow the business.
We urge Congress to reform the system of patent enforcement and litigation, and to include protections for tech and software startups that are already included in proposals offered by Congressional Republicans and Democrats, and by President Obama.  Legislation should:
  • Create a cheaper, faster alternative to litigation by allowing the Patent Office to review – when evidence justifies – all business method and software patents so that start-ups have a chance to fight against the bad quality patents that are trolls’ main ammunition.
  • Require the Patent Office to create public searchable demand letter databases so we can track the basis and volume of patent claims and quickly identify abusive trolls;
  • Reduce litigation costs by requiring parties to pay if they demand more than “core” technology documents, which are generally all that is needed to know if a technology is infringing.
  • Protect end-users of off-the-shelf hardware and software.  Just as coffee shops should not be sued for providing wi-fi to customers, app developers should not be sued for using off-the-shelf APIs that infringe a patent.
America cannot afford to let extortionist trolls continue attacking innovative startups. Please support prompt and targeted reform of our patent enforcement and litigation system, including the referenced provisions that are already included in several legislative proposals.Click Here to endorse this movement.
