A man by the name of John Chen is suing Major League Baseball for unpaid wages. He is also seeking a class action status be placed on the suit to include over 2,000 other volunteers that he worked with during the All-Star Game festivities.

Wait, volunteers get paid? Apparently Mr. Chen ardently believes so. Enough so that he is willing to publicly fight, tooth and nail, to prove he’s right.

It seems Bud Selig wouldn’t risk looking foolish over such a small amount of money; especially when the annual event brought $191.5 million in revenue to the city that never sleeps.

The question that truly remains and should be answered as litigation progresses is, were all of these people truly volunteers or were they hired to be paid workers?

PED Suspension

Major League Baseball’s investigation into PED from a Florida-based Biogenesis, involving a number of players who allegedly received performance-enhancing drugs from the laboratory, will take another step forward, as the league has announced to expect suspensions handed out this week involving players such as Alex Rodriguez, Jhonny Peralta, Nelson Cruz and others.

This will likely set off a chain reaction of appeals by most, if not all, players involved. Milwaukee Brewers star Ryan Braun has already accepted a 65-game suspension without pay last week for his role with PED scandal. However, Yankees star Alex Rodriguez will not accept any punishment lightly, and vows to fight any suspension, along with his lawyer. The league is looking to punish Arod, not on PED allegations alone, but under Article XII (B) of the Basic Players Agreement, which states: “Players may be disciplined for just cause for conduct that is materially detrimental or materially prejudicial to the best interests of baseball including, but not limited to, engaging in conduct in violation of federal, state or local law.” The difference is, Arod will have to serve his suspension, IMMEDIATELY, even if he files an appeal.

According to ESPN.com, the Yankees, who have been far less than happy with not only Arod’s performance and attitude, but also his inability to remain healthy, could recoup at least 75 percent of Rodriguez’s contract, which would be a huge benefit for the team. We may have seen the last of Arod in pinstripes!

SGN – NFL – Back To Work

         training camp 2013

It has been nearly six months since the last real NFL action on the field, and has been your typical off season.  Scouting, rookie combine, tryouts, the draft, free agency, retirement, rule changes, and, of course, your typical handful of arrests/citations.  I speak for all of us football geeks when I say “thank god THAT’s all over” as our favorite teams, players and coaches report back to work.  All 32 teams are scheduled to begin Training Camp various days throughout the week.  Here is a quick recap of major news this offseason:

Shortly after winning the Super Bowl, the Baltimore Ravens traded away Anquan Boldin to the Super Bowl losing Niners, released Bernard Pollard, Ray Lewis retired, Ed Reed was not resigned, and relocated to Houston to join the Texans.  Paul Kruger left for the Browns, Dannell Ellerbe signed with Miami, and Joe Flacco was handed a FAT contract, and they added a pass rusher in Elvis Dumerville.  And most recently, Jacoby Jones shows up to training camp without being able to pass the physical.  They did a great job in the draft, but those are some huge holes to fill.

Brian Urlacher also retired, as the aging veteran could not get a deal worked out with Chicago, and same can be said for James Harrison, as he leaves Pittsburgh and joins the Bengals.  Mike Wallace joined the Dolphins, who broke the bank in free agency by also adding Dannell Ellerbe, Chris Clemons, Phillip Wheeler, Brent Grimes and Dustin Keller.  The Packers work out a HUGE deal to lock up Aaron Rodgers long term, but lose Greg Jennings to the Rival Vikings, who also had a good looking draft.

The Arizona Cardinals attempt to upgrade by  hiring head coach Bruce Arians, another former member of the Steelers coaching staff, resign Rashad Johnson, and add Rashard Mendenhall, Drew Stanton, Yeremiah Bell, Jerraud Powers, Carson Palmer and Josh Cribbs.

The Patriots lose Wes Welker to free agency, and Aaron Hernandez to the State of Massachusetts, as he was arrested without bail in a murder investigation, but add Danny Amendola and Adrian Wilson.  They also add Tim Tebow, whom the NY Jets released after drafting College hype Geno Smith, and signing David Garrard, only to add more to the quarterback controversy on the green side of New York.  Meanwhile, the blue side of New York has worked out terms with Victor Cruz, after losing Osi Umenyiora to the Falcons, who have also signed Stephen Jackson, and Tony Gonzalez for another year.

Along with the Arizona Cardinals, the Eagles find a new head coach, Chip Kelly, after they part ways with Andy Reid, who found a job quickly in Kansas City, and now has Alex Smith as his quarterback to mold.  Doug Maronne finds a head coaching job in Buffalo, The Bears fire Smith and hire Marc Trestman, Cleveland hires Rob Chudzinski, San Deigo MikeMccoy, and Jacksonville Gus Bradley.                                       hofgame2013preseasong2013

With the start of training camp, and pre-season right around the corner, the Hall of Fame game between the Dolphins and Cowboys less than 2 weeks away.  We can now start to scout our favorite team’s rookies, and newly acquired free agents, as well as players for our fantasy teams.  Here is goodbye to the dreadfully long 6 month off season, and hello to being just a few steps away from Kickoff weekend with friends, family, good games, good times, and good food.

Pedroia Futher Embedded in Red Sox Franchise

20130723-164951.jpg
WEEI.com reported today that the Red Sox and Dustin Pedroia have finalized a deal that will keep the second baseman in Boston until 2021, when he turns 38. The new contract, equaling about $100 million, turned out to be a pretty sweet deal for both sides.

Pedey will be making around $14 million a year, which in this day and age, isn’t breaking the bank – proving to be a serious advantage for Boston, locking up the 2 time Gold Glove winner and 2007 AL Rookie of the Year through the prime of his career.

The “low” figure doesn’t seem to be a problem for the franchise player, since he worked a no trade clause into the contract. It’s clear to anyone who watches the nearly 30 year old play, that he loves playing for Boston. And the fans love him in kind.

According to Tim Britton from the Providence Journal, Dustin was quoted saying, “These guys are my family,” when asked, last week, about the possible extension.

The Red Sox are in fine form this season, proving their worth with a continuous best record in the American League. And their all-star second baseman has contributed quite a bit to that.

Pedroia is batting with a solid .308 average, 6 home runs, 57 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. On top of that, his veteran experience and jovial attitude help the team with its success and will possibly help lead the Sox to another World Series appearance.
