Brotherly Love

eli_peyton1

Regardless of personal favorites, we can all agree that Christmas dinner at the Manning’s home has to be filled with plenty of trash talk, bragging, and brotherly love.  With 3 rings between the 2 of them, and a father that played behind perhaps one of the worst offensive lines in NFL history for 10 years, there has to be plenty of football conversation going on behind the scenes.

Although Archie Manning had 9 losing seasons in his 10 year career as quarterback with the Saints, he was still a very respected player amongst his peers.  He also raised 2 world champion quarterbacks, in Eli and Peyton.  This has left a question pre-destined to be asked once the two of them joined the NFL: Which brother is better?

Ex New York Giant Tiki Barber, had always questioned the leadership of Eli Manning, and since Peyton joined the NFL first, he set the “standard” Eli would have to live up to.  All through his college career as an Ole Miss Rebel, scouts and professional writers always had this to say about Eli: “He’s good, but he is no Peyton Manning”.  Tiki agreed with this statement, originally, but has a change of tune about it now.  After watching Eli Manning’s successful playoff runs, and a game ending, need to score drive in super bowl XLII against the Patriots, and then defeating the patriots again in XLVI, outshining Tom Brady both times by winning the MVP awards, how could you not agree that you cannot spell the word Elite, without Eli.

Peyton Manning has to be one of, if not the best of all time at reading the defense pre-snap, calling audible’s and hot routes at the line of scrimmage, as well as changing the protection, to protect himself from the blitz.  However, once it comes time for the post season, Peyton seems to get rattled and lose the best of his qualities.  Peyton has a losing post season record at 9-11, with 8 “one and done” playoff appearances, and only 1 super bowl ring to show off.  Not the outcome you would expect from a 4 time league MVP, a 2 time best NFL player ESPY award winner, and a 12 time Pro Bowl starting QB.

So, in a professional game, what means the most? Individual stats? Or championships?  These questions can be debated until the end of time, but what it comes down to is “What is your job?”  Your job as an NFL quarterback is to win games, and win championships.  That being said, I would have to agree with Tiki on this one.  When it comes down to “win or go home” and clutch plays in the big game to win the championship, Eli has outshined his older brother Peyton by a long shot.  Only time will tell if Peyton can win 2 more championships, and outshine his brother in the end.  He is certainly in a very good spot to accomplish this with the Denver Broncos, but we will see.

Mo Brought to Tears from Massive Standing Ovation – AL Claims Home Field Advantage

20130717-143815.jpg
Last night was an emotional game for everyone – especially Mariano Rivera. Mo pitched in his final All-Star appearance. And as to be expected, continued his streak of scoreless innings pitched in All-Star games. In his 13 appearances, Mo has 9 innings pitched, 5 hits, with a 0.00 ERA.

After those 13 appearances, Rivera, at 43 years old, finally received his first MVP award from Bud Selig last night. It was a truly endearing presentation, with Selig giving Mo an unexpected hug after conveying his affection for the pitcher he dubbed the greatest closer of all time.

The last number 42 to play the game entered in the bottom of the 8th inning and made quick work, retiring the side with the efficiency he has displayed for his entire career – helping to secure the American League’s lead of 3-0.

The winning runs weren’t scored until after Matt Harvey and Clayton Kershaw blanked the AL’s batting in the first 3 innings. Harvey earned 3 of the 7 total strikeouts for the NL pitching staff in his 2 innings; proving Bruce Bochy’s decision to start the young right-handed pitcher wise.

After being examined by the Mets’ doctor, it was determined that he had a contusion in his quadricep, according to a Tweet by Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal. Cano was replaced by Dustin Pedroia when he left the field.

The first run the AL run scored was by Miguel Cabrera in the 4th inning, driven in by Jose Bautista. One out into the 5th, J.J. Hardy grounded out while driving in Adam Jones. The final run scored by the AL, to ultimately put the game away happened in the 8th, due to a ground rule double by Jason Kipnis, bringing Salvado Perez home.

Those runs, in combination with the American League’s lights-out pitching earned them the win and home field advantage in the World Series.

The winning pitcher was the Chicago White Sox’s Chris Sale, with 2 strikeouts in his 2 innings pitched. The loss goes to the Diamondbacks’ Patrick Corbin, leaving the game with 1 IP and 1 ER. The save was awarded to the Texas Rangers’ Joe Nathan, after he struck out two thirds of the final NL side.

Baseball’s PED Suspensions Likely Pushed to Next Season

If any baseball fan knows something about the Biogenesis Scandal it’s that Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun, two of Major League Baseball’s premier stars, are facing 100 game suspensions, along with as many as 20 other players. What we’re all waiting on, is for something to happen.

Now it seems, whatever that something might be, won’t be carried out until next season. According to the Associated Press:

“The baseball players’ association says any suspensions resulting from the sport’s latest drug investigation likely won’t be served until next year if the discipline is challenged before an arbitrator.

Union head Michael Weiner expects Major League Baseball will notify the union of its plans for penalties in the next month, and the union will maintain any discipline should not be announced until after a grievance hearing and then only if arbitrator Fredric Horowitz upholds a ban.”

Being that it’s nearly August, and the large number of players potentially involved in this scandal, it doesn’t seem possible to investigate, arbitrate and hand down disciplinary action before the end of this season.

Baseball’s commissioner, Bud Selig, appeared on David Letterman on Monday stating, “We’re in the midst of a very thorough and tough investigation…” But when he was asked whether or not A-Rod would be suspended, he responded by saying he knew, but he wouldn’t say.

AL and Cespedes take the Derby-Who will take the Game?

No one quite knew what to expect when Robinson Cano chose Yoenis Cespedes for the American League Home Run Derby team; he hadn’t even made the All-Star team.  Nevertheless, Cespedes proved his worth right away, hitting 17 homers in the first round.  That gave the AL Derby team a huge advantage and ultimately the win in the team event.

In the final round, Bryce Harper took the plate first to start the individual competition.  Harper hit a solid 8 home runs, with a long ball of 447 feet.  Cespedes, more than warmed up from just having won the team event, stepped up to the plate and one-upped Harper; hitting 9 home runs, making the 9th his long ball at 455 feet.

Yoenis Cespedes becoming the first winner of the Home Run Derby Crown who isn’t actually on the All-Star team is just the fireworks baseball fans want to see in the coveted Midsummer Classic.  Now, who will win tonight’s game?
