Baseball’s PED Suspensions Likely Pushed to Next Season

If any baseball fan knows something about the Biogenesis Scandal it’s that Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun, two of Major League Baseball’s premier stars, are facing 100 game suspensions, along with as many as 20 other players. What we’re all waiting on, is for something to happen.

Now it seems, whatever that something might be, won’t be carried out until next season. According to the Associated Press:

“The baseball players’ association says any suspensions resulting from the sport’s latest drug investigation likely won’t be served until next year if the discipline is challenged before an arbitrator.

Union head Michael Weiner expects Major League Baseball will notify the union of its plans for penalties in the next month, and the union will maintain any discipline should not be announced until after a grievance hearing and then only if arbitrator Fredric Horowitz upholds a ban.”

Being that it’s nearly August, and the large number of players potentially involved in this scandal, it doesn’t seem possible to investigate, arbitrate and hand down disciplinary action before the end of this season.

Baseball’s commissioner, Bud Selig, appeared on David Letterman on Monday stating, “We’re in the midst of a very thorough and tough investigation…” But when he was asked whether or not A-Rod would be suspended, he responded by saying he knew, but he wouldn’t say.

AL and Cespedes take the Derby-Who will take the Game?

No one quite knew what to expect when Robinson Cano chose Yoenis Cespedes for the American League Home Run Derby team; he hadn’t even made the All-Star team.  Nevertheless, Cespedes proved his worth right away, hitting 17 homers in the first round.  That gave the AL Derby team a huge advantage and ultimately the win in the team event.

In the final round, Bryce Harper took the plate first to start the individual competition.  Harper hit a solid 8 home runs, with a long ball of 447 feet.  Cespedes, more than warmed up from just having won the team event, stepped up to the plate and one-upped Harper; hitting 9 home runs, making the 9th his long ball at 455 feet.

Yoenis Cespedes becoming the first winner of the Home Run Derby Crown who isn’t actually on the All-Star team is just the fireworks baseball fans want to see in the coveted Midsummer Classic.  Now, who will win tonight’s game?

Bad Week for Boston Fans

First Doc Rivers leaves Boston to coach the Clippers, then the Blackhawks beat the Bruins for the Stanley Cup, on top of that, Aaron Hernandez is arrested for murder, and now the Celtics have agreed to a trade that sends Garnet, Pierce and Terry packing.  Not too far, just over to Brooklyn where they will join the Nets.

Nets get:

3 first round picks over the next 4 years, for veterans that may not even last 4 years?  Seems like a lot to give up, but this is a team who made the playoffs last year, and wants to win now.   Don’t get me wrong, these guys can still ball, but as far as for the future of the franchise, if this team does not win now then it will be a bad move.

As for the Celtics, they are obviously in a rebuilding stage.  Taking all of Rondo’s support away from him may even force Rondo to not sign an extension after his ’14-’15 contract expires.  That is, if Rondo even rehabs his torn ACL enough for the Celtics to want him to stay, or if he will pull a Derrick Rose and take a year off to watch his team play.

All in all, this seems like a lose-lose trade.  The Nets may be able to sell more jersey’s with their new roster, but with teams such as the Heat, Pacers and even the Bulls, I don’t see them winning any championship any time soon.  And as for the Celtics, they have been declining little by little ever since their game 7 loss to the Lakers in the 2010, and I don’t see that changing any time soon either.
